
Mary Agnes Hirl, 54, formerly of Mishawaka, Ind., born Feb. 27, 1952, passed away on Tuesday evening, Dec. 5, in Belleville, Ill. After graduating from Marian High School in Mishawaka, Ind., she entered the order of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ through 1981. She received an Associate of Science Degree from Ancilla Domini College, Donaldson, In., in 1975 and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Alverno College, Milwaukee, Wis., in 1976.
Mary touched
countless lives for 28 years as a school teacher for the Catholic Diocese of
Belleville, Ill. She taught at St. John's School from 1977-1981; at St. Phillips
School, East St. Louis 1981-1985; at St Clare School, O'Fallon 1985-1987; and at
Holy Childhood School, Mascoutah, 1987- present. She was very active and
involved in youth ministry in the Teens Encounter Christ, Quest, and Luke 18
retreat programs, as a CYO Moderator, volleyball coach and was often seen
leading musical sessions with her guitar. Mary also worked at the Disney Store
in Union Station, St. Louis, and during the past seven seasons, at the Muny
Opera in St. Louis as marketing assistant. Her beautiful and upbeat spirit will
be missed by many, but will continue to shine in the lives of those she touched.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph L. and Marie B., nee
Schumacher, Hirl; and her sister Teresa Hirl. She is survived by two sisters,
Barbara (Harold) Miller of Mishawaka, Ind., and Rosemary (Bruce) Hess of
Rochester, Ind.; and by five brothers, Joseph (Margaret) Hirl of Fairfax
Station, Va., Francis (Carolyn) Hirl of Fort Wayne, Ind., Bernard (Mary Frances)
Hirl of Severna Park, Md., Thomas Hirl of Angola, Ind., and Peter (Kathryn) Hirl
of Granger, Ind.
The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to the Holy Childhood Mary Hirl Scholarship Fund, c/o Holy Childhood of Jesus Christ school, 215 North John St., Mascoutah, Ill. 62258.
